Divani, Poltrone Toro, AZUCENA
Design: Luigi Caccia Dominioni, 1973
Realizzati per le sale del Club House di Monticello, il divano e la poltrona Toro sono pensati per essere goduti da tutti i lati e possono vivere al centro della stanza che occupano.
Perché Toro? Il nome nasce dal fatto che questo oggetto può essere “preso per le corna”. Infatti la struttura metallica – elemento che ne costituisce lo scheletro – fuoriesce dall’imbottitura. Per questo motivo i braccioli terminano con delle estremità che danno forma a un’impugnatura che consente di spostarlo e ruotarlo con estrema facilità. In questo modo gli ospiti del bellissimo country club alle porte di Milano potevano disporre le sedute come meglio credevano, per creare di volta in volta uno spazio per conversare o per stare tranquilli e soli. Siamo quindi in presenza di un toro docile, che si lascia prendere per le corna. Ma è facile scovare un divertito riferimento a Toro Seduto, il mitico condottiero Sioux protagonista di tanti film e fumetti italiani degli anni ‘60 e ‘70, periodo nel quale Toro vede la luce. E se invece Caccia Dominioni avesse pensato al segno zodiacale? Il carattere pacioso, dolce e deciso di questa famiglia di oggetti rende possibile anche questa interpretazione. Tre fasce morbide, invitanti ed estremamente imbottite, sono gli elementi strutturali del divano e della poltrona, che si possono completare con un comodo ed essenziale poggiapiedi. Il relax e il dialogo sono al centro di questo progetto, un classico degli anni Settanta che si ostina – da bravo Toro – a non invecchiare e a non voler passare di moda.
Sofà, armchairs Toro, Azucena
Designed for the Club House rooms of Monticello, the Toro sofa and armchair are meant to be enjoyed from all sides and can thrive at the center of the room they occupy.
Why Toro? The name comes from the fact that this object can be “taken by the horns.” In fact, the metal structure – which forms its skeleton – protrudes from the upholstery. For this reason, the armrests end with tips that form a handle, allowing it to be easily moved and rotated. In this way, the guests of the beautiful country club near Milan could arrange the seating as they pleased, creating a space for conversation or for peaceful solitude as desired. We are therefore dealing with a docile bull that allows itself to be taken by the horns. But it’s easy to find a playful reference to Sitting Bull, the legendary Sioux leader featured in many Italian films and comics of the 1960s and 1970s, the period in which Toro comes to life. What if Caccia Dominioni had thought of the zodiac sign instead? The peaceful, gentle, and determined character of this family of objects allows for this interpretation as well. Three soft, inviting, and highly padded bands are the structural elements of the sofa and armchair, which can be complemented by a comfortable and essential footrest. Relaxation and dialogue are at the heart of this design, a classic from the 1970s that stubbornly refuses – like a good bull – to age and go out of style.
